I was trying to come up with common traits of societies where these subcultures exist. I don't know. What's your theory? I would guess some mixture of: a free society, a multicultural society, a high-tech society, etc.. That seems to be the common denominator.

Same as any culture I would guess. It doesn't just appear and it isn't static, it is constantly evolving in the context of the environment it finds itself in. Why, what do you think?
