Flume, Chet Faker, Glass Animals...probably not what most people code to. I pick this stuff because it's what I like and I always feel motivated and more positive when I listen to good music. I sometimes get distracted but chances are I would have gotten distracted by something else if music wasn't playing.

When I do math though I listen to classical music, especially Bach. And now that I think of it, I would probably be more productive if I were to listen to stuff like that while coding since it's so similar to mathematics. I'd be curious to know if anyone listens to classical music and notices a difference.

You know I'm not even sure if my stuff would be considered good. I mean I try and find the best way possible to solve a problem, I do a lot of planning, even write out pseudocode on paper before actually programming if I work on something serious. My prof's say I go beyond their expectations, but that's not really the same as saying your a good programmer or have the potential to be. So I hope I don't ever find out I'm part of that group, and if I am I want to get out of it asap.

All I know are women programmers. But really all I know is one woman programmer besides myself so it's still not very many. And both of us are fairly new to it (less than 3 years) and only stumbled into it becausse of our uni's math requirements. If comp sci was a requirement for every college student, like algebra is, then I bet more women would get into programming.

I have a question for you tho, would you say it's more difficult for a woman to get a decent job as a programmer? Or is it about the same, or even easier? You may not even know, I just thought I'd ask.

No, it's just me being honest and writing exactly what comes to my mind. What makes you think it's a scam?

haha I mean in my life they are. Severely :/ My school used to be an all girls school so there aren't many guys there, and that's really the only place I've been exposed to programmers.

This sounds really interesting. I tutor at my uni and there are a lot of students who have a really hard time understanding simple things like mixed fractions. We have ipads at our disposal when tutoring and I think it'd be wonderful if somehing like this could be made into an app. I was thinking about making something to help other people with math, not so much a calculator type thing but some type of game (actually have an idea for a game and im currently working on it) and some type of like study helper and practice exercises that are presented in a "less scary" way than in a text book.

lol I just discovered this site today. Been watching someone basically figure out to do for like 2 hours, but it was definitely entertaining.

And now of course I checked out unicorn and my god, what a silly man.

Now I'm trying to find someone interesting to watch but I seem to be lost in a flood of people leaving

I feel like sat's mostly test on mechanical stuff, like here's an equation now solve it, or use this formula type of thing. If you get into math, you realize there's a whole nother part to it and it's incredibly interesting. It's definitely challenging, and at times frustrating, but it's so rewarding and I feel like it not only strengthens your number skills but it makes you a better person. Like, you understand logic at a deeper level and are able to solve more complex problems, not just those relating to math, and are able to make a more convincing argument. Actually it's one of the things that has helped me the most with my writing (literature minor).

I like to try to get people to appreciate math more :p

Well I study math at uni and one of the required courses for my major is a 2 part comp sci course for c++, so that's how I was introduced to it. I ended up being the only person in my class (reallyyyy small school) and we started with simple stuff like if/then, switch statements and loops and then got into classes and structs and etc. I didn't think it was difficult, but the class was originally like 6 people and everyone else dropped, so apparently it's too much for some people. Everything else I know (besides a bit of game programming which my professor helped me with) I taught myself. I guess having a good understanding of mathematics helps a lot, and I took discrete math at the same time, I think that helped a lot too. It got me more into the habit of thinking logically.

I mostly use c++ since that's what I have the most experience with. I've been teaching myself html/css and javascript though and its pretty fun.

I just love thinking about it. And then figuring it out. You're right, it's so satisfying. I study math, and I really like it and for the longest time thought I would be an actuary, but once I learned c++ my life changes and now I want nothing more than to have a career as a programmer. I do it all the time anyway, it would be so awesome to get paid for it. The only part im worried about is my eyesight (which is already bad) getting worse, and the fact that I'd have to be sitting at a computer all the time, but the pros outway the cons. My heart is set.

don't think I could ever give it up honestly. I study math and so I was required to take a c++ class and ever since I've been addicted. I think I found my calling.
