Linux was a little slow gaining compatibility with stuff (compared to Windows). But thanks to the usual open source culture of tightness and correctness, almost everything works on Linux nowadays, with no silly driver installations and mostly in a bug-free way.
If you have a somewhat high end headset check out this repo, it will let use nicer codecs.
