Comment on: Why can't programmers... Program?

One Interview I had for a java position had me take a handwritten test. I was really worried before it; I hadn't written any java in nearly 5 years. The test was really basic. First question was I was given a function and asked what the return type was. The last question was fizz buzz. Was also asked to write some simple code and find some syntax errors in some code. I thought it was overly simple. The interviewer said I was the first one he's seen get the first question right in he can't remember how. I mean come on if you can't tell me the return type of a function you don't belong in the programming field.

I think the important thing is to make sure an applicant can solve basic problems in the language the job requires. All the other stuff can be taught.

A quote from the author

"This isn't something I've been able to do because I'm brilliant (heck, I'd argue that compared to a lot of the community, I'm pretty dim)."

Sounds like someone is using plugging trigger words into the search function to me.

Comment on: How can I grasp the concept of C sockets?

I'd say its good thing to learn the OS calls and the basics behind socket programming, but for any practical purposed maybe look into zeroMQ I really liked using it so far. It has libraries for all the major languages and you don't have to bog yourself down with how many bytes were sent you.
