Comment on: Google Shuts Down Internet Balloon, “Loon” Project Due to High Operational Costs - Activist Post
At least they tried. The alternative is to complain that no one has tried using balloons. Even if you don't like them, google did it and they couldn't make it work. Now we know for sure and can move on.

Comment on: Our experience with the Fediverse, and why we left
It’s worth noting that many of the claims there are critiques against social media in general (e.g. reading headlines only). But a few great points in there as well. Article feels more like “the Fediverse isn’t much better than the platforms it’s being deployed to replace.”

>Even if every single one of the 32.5 million new sign-ups to Telegram and Signal are WhatsApp exiles, it's still a drop in the bucket. Comment on: UK says Big Tech is "manipulating lives", launches investigation into its algorithms
Manipulation is not (just) about order of posts/comments. It includes what you get to see and what you don't get to see. Good luck finding out what stories are purposefully being hidden from you by refreshing a site that is not showing them to you. Your proposed solution requires that there is something to tax. Tech companies would be able to close their remote office in your country and bypass your solution.

Comment on: Apple’s first VR headset reportedly includes a fabric design, a fan, and expensive price tag
As much as my ass is chapped with Apple pulling Parler from the App Store, they have a much preferable model where they sell devices based on the price of the device and take a best effort towards privacy and security. Google on the other hand survives on selling your data. Compared to Facebook’s plans for the oculus, the Apple device sounds way better

oh, dang. They may not have recognized the words/concept. Try using 'privacy' or BigTech in the title next time. Good luck on your projects - hope they'll be something I can use soon. I have 2 PCs with Linux and a few browsers on them. I am no techie, but would be glad to volunteer to play around with your software or platforms and send a list and screenshots or even videos of any bugs. I feel strongly that I need to be part of this change away from BigTech and BigBiz and if all I can do is tell you the things that seem off to me - before your official release- I'd love to be able to do that. I'm doing that now for a dev.

I agree and would like to ask that you post info on this subject if you see it. I sometimes use Matrix, bbut dislike that the posts aren't like they are here on ruqqus or reddit or FB r other sites Can decentralized handle posts. Matrix always feels like I am intruding on someone's conversation and the topic usually isn't one I am interested in. If Matrix is how decentralized works, it seems too disorganized, too close to anarchy for me and thus a waste of time. I have better things to do than sifting through info I don't want or need. Matrix feels like a chat room and I like organized facts better.

Thanks for the response, was beginning to think noone was going to lol. The AES-256 default is nice to hear. The problem with Git is there still needs to be some centralized place/individuals that control the version. Otherwise you could never trust the source. You could always fork the source, but then that essentially makes two different files. This also begs the question for me, users need to look for something by name and not hash, so wouldn't it be a potential risk for the darker actors of the internet to name their files the same as something legit? This was a big problem with the gnutella world and bittorrent's only fix was relying on a community of people to vet the file first. However, perhaps I shouldn't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Something needs to be done.

:) Firefox and google chrome used to be good, there was a time I dropped firefox for google chrome because firefox simply wasn't working out, when I found out about the "diversity" and kicking the CEO for "wrong views" it all made sense as to why firefox wasn't delivering anymore. I found out the former CEO was involved with Brave (which I think it's not perfect at all, but it's better) I tried it and guess what, "diversity" doesn't make your product more functional so I stuck with it. As for chrome, when it came out it was fast, it was efficient, it was like the second coming of netscape. ...but google jut stopped caring when they had no one to compete with and it turned to a slug that spends it's time eating away your computer resources.

I don't know IPFS super well, so I could totally be ignorant and am open to someone educating me on this, but I fail to see IPFS defeating HTTP. The fault I see is in the hash commit for live documents. Wouldn't the repository of commits have to be centralized? Otherwise wouldn't it be anarchy and truly impossible or unlikely that you would be downloading the updated copy of that document? Also, if someone more knowledgeable does end up responding: does IPFS use AES-256 encryption by default or is that still a gap?

Comment on: Brave Browser Integrates IPFS
It deduplicates a lot of web content and allows a user to automatically host the content they've seen. In effect, if Ruqqus was mostly hosted on IPFS, and then you scrolled past a meme, if another users' computer tried to load that meme, it could load it off your device. Essentially, it makes censorship very, very, very difficult. Something natively hosted on IPFS is almost censorship-proof, without censors shutting off the internet entirely. Even then, data could still be moved around regionally.

This is absolutely huge. If and when Basic Attention Tokens and IPFS are adopted by Ruqqus, Gab, etc. , the censors effectively lose their ability to shut down speech through payment processors or shutting down hosts.

I switched from it when it started becoming crap because they chose "diversity" and intolerance over competence. A previous CEO had personal beliefs (I don't even agree with), but he's entitled to his opinions, they kicked him out for it, and then it wasn't beliefs, it was actually doing stupid stuff like prioritizing diversity and woke crap.

Unless you have a weak PC, just use a generic FF browser and Brave. I have for well over a year or 2. Brave does a great job at maskiing your fingerprint compared to FF. I have 2 or 3 accounts or profiles on each browser and 2 PCs, so I ran a few tests to see how various changes affected each. Brave came out far ahead re fingerprint-masking and didn't even seem to show that I changed my theme (color). I just started using the generic FF browser LibreWolf and it masks or spoofs my city and state, OS/Operating System, and maybe even my IP. I still need to check this out more as I just discovered the extent of the spoofing an hour or so ago. LibreWolf was easy to install compard to the other generic FFs. - except for Falkon, but Falkon is so ancient! Still testing and cmparing and hope to do some half-assed videos about it so that others can see what they'll get before they download and install.

I think that’s true- but it’s still a huge milestone. Most of the expenses- I’m sure, of running a social media site- will be in hosting non-text content. Having these files offloaded onto IPFS helps significantly

Apple didn't make an Open Sparc chip for their new processor, they made ARM. You may not be an apple fan, but they are setting the market right now. ARM 64 will be the new desktop architecture in a few years. The mark everyone is aiming for is desktop productivity than can match an M1 for the same power budget, and that's only one CPU architecture right now.

Comment on: Pirate Bay Founder Thinks Parler’s Inability to Stay Online Is ‘Embarrassing’
It's not a very fair comparison, governments mildly target TPB because it satisfies their donors and lobbyists to see them "take it seriously". Governments target free speech because it actually is a life-or-death issue for the government - it's not faced with decreased support, it's faced with guillotines from Antifa and gallows from Capitol Patriots. And they know there's a 90% chance they'll never be used...but 90% isn't as comforting as you might think. Also note how the article ends. >In more recent years, Kolmoisoppi has moved on to fund Njalla, a privacy-centric domain name registration service. One he says was already asked to host Parler, and refused. “Of course we wouldn't,” Kolmisoppi said. “We're pro human rights, which includes the right to not be killed by extreme right wing terrorists.”

I think AMD is in the same boat as intel. The best AMD could hope for would be to license an ARM chip to compete with apple silicon, but then they would be second fiddle again. AMD has had their sites set on Intel and not the industry and that's going to bite both of them.

Not really. In both Spain and Italy, there were riots against their second shutdown that is said to last until May, but possibly until November 2021. The rest of the world needs jobs/money, too. And, young people resent this 'being on restriction' concept. While looking up this Jan. 17th rebellion issue, I saw that people in France last year were talking about revolution and that was before covid-19...making me think all the more that covid-19 was part of a plan.

You would like to hear the argument that windmills only generate when the wind blows, and solar only generates when the sun is shining, and thus so-called renewable power is unreliable power?

Comment on: Microsoft planning for significant UI changes to Windows - The Verge
Same. Latest update messed up my network card AGAIN so not even steam gaming anymore before I *completely re-install Windows*. When I get to the point where I'm annoyed enough to reformat, I'll probably go the linux gaming route.

i feel bad for the employees that are going to have to deal with banks/social security to get their lives back in order. this will probably end up killing the company too.

There better be a Windows ARM laptop real soon or no amount of redesign will save them from the reality of Windows laptops running Intel/AMD being rated in hours of battery life and Macbooks being measured in days of battery life, with equivalent or better performance. Businesses don't care about fanboyism, they want the minimum cost for max performance. Right now, that's a M1 mac. Intel and Windows are shitting their pants right now. AMD is eating too much thermal paste in the corner to know what's going on.
