I use recursion to build/search trees and it works well. I've never seen UML by hand but the idea of it sounds awful.

It actually comes from the 70s and was primarily used first in building GUIs. I'm one of those weirdos who likes and uses the pattern. :)

Comment on: What is your preferred SCM?

Git is my choice because of the light-weight branching and decentralization. I spent the last few years setting up git workflows for the development team I was on and it was a good experience. If I had to choose a secondary alternative it would be svn.
