Comment on: Computer Programming to be renamed Googling Stackoverflow

My take on SO

PRO: If you're picking up a new language and the documentation is unclear, SO is a good place to find a real world example posted.

CON: SO commenters are an interesting mix of helpful, talented folks and snarky neckbeards who either need the stick further up their ass, or removed entirely. Sometimes the place reminds me of a help-desk guy who is always a condescending dick to the people he helps.

Comment on: Microsoft bringing SSH to Windows and PowerShell

I came to post the same snark... :) It's a good thing, but at least 10 years too late to announce it without getting some mockery.

Comment on: Help me pick a language for my idea! Not really content with the ones I know already

You can use pretty much any language to do what you like, it's just a matter of efficiency in dev time and comfort with it. IMHO, if you like PHP, use it. If you run into something it doesn't do for you, write the functionality yourself. You can mix CGI type binaries with PHP if you have to, but i'd be surprised if you can't implement it all in PHP.

Also: write some VBA modules to front-end your app in the user's spreadsheets, so they can enter data and look at updates from web OR spreadsheet. My experience with excel junkies is they never totally let go...

Comment on: Does Java run faster than C and C++ today? [No, because it only matches it; build once, run anywhere mentality.]

Java is today's Visual Basic.

IMHO, like Visual Basic, talented people can do good things with it while the cut-and-paste drones continue to make apps that are 80% 3rd party dependencies, 10% code from SO and 10% XML stitching it all together. I hate 90+% of the Java projects I have worked on, but I don't hate Java. It's just a language with a set of trade offs. Unfortunately, it seems to sit in the same spot VB did once upon a time.

Comment on: Help me test my school programming assignment

It's a nice, simple app. I like it and think it would be great to add to this site.

Comment on: Help me test my school programming assignment

I tried it on a few browsers, and was thinking that everyone was being pretty pleasant and mature really. About then, I realized when I was typing "test" I'd managed somehow to type "twat".

Caught it before I hit send. >.<

Comment on: Help me test my school programming assignment

Works fine on:

FF 15.0/linux

IE 9.0/Win7. (Did not report any errors when i enabled dev tools on IE.)

FF 36/Win7 (some warnings in dev console, nothing to get worked up about)

Nice widget.
