It looks like China is going to quickly rub up against the glass ceiling. The article says that the CCP has committed 1.4 trillion USD over the next 5 years. $280 billion per year is a lot of money, but it's nowhere near what the quarterly spend on R&D is for semiconductors for the rest of the world collectively.

Comment on: Coronavirus: Apple and Google to send Covid notifications even WITHOUT an app | Daily Mail Online
>The privacy concern is the fact that it's not a voluntary install. It should be an app.
From the OP article:
>Users will need to authorise the system on their phone as it will be 'off' by default and can be flicked on or off at the user's discretion
>Instead of building an entire app, the new notification system only requires public health officials to submit a small configuration file to Apple and Google in order for it to work.
So, you still need to install an app (at least on Android, doesn't seem as clear cut on iOS). This change looks to be an attempt to make it easier to use and increase adoption due to the painfully slow uptick of local health authorities to build apps. The system appears to still be opt-in, but now you no longer need a local health authority to build and maintain an app so you can do that.
>As for how useful it is now, that depends on your perception of how dangerous the virus is or isn't. The new information on the death rates from the CDC invalidates 94% of the attributed deaths, making COVID19 half as deadly as the annual flu.
Not quite, it states that 94% of those deaths had at least 2 comorbidities. Diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity... while COVID-19 may have been the "straw the broke the camel's back" as far as cause of death, I think discounting the number of camel's out there with backs ready to break is naive.

I disagree entirely. Having a good way to perform contact tracing is going to be essential to helping getting things back open so that we can try to prevent outbreaks from becoming widespread. If you can let people know about exposure before they have a chance to spread it, that's going to be extremely vital until we have a vaccine and it's been widely adopted. Further, the next time something like this comes about, we'll have the framework in place to have it in the early stages.
To the privacy implications, are you sure you understand how it works? [From the FAQ](https://covid19.apple.com/contacttracing):
>The Exposure Notifications system harnesses the power of Bluetooth technology to aid in exposure notification. Once enabled, users’ devices will regularly send out a beacon via Bluetooth that includes a random Bluetooth identifier — basically, a string of random numbers that aren’t tied to a user's identity and change every 10-20 minutes for additional protection. Other phones will be listening for these beacons and broadcasting theirs as well. When each phone receives another beacon, it will record and securely store that beacon on the device.
>At least once per day, the system will download a list of the keys for the beacons that have been verified as belonging to people confirmed as positive for COVID-19. Each device will check the list of beacons it has recorded against the list downloaded from the server. If there is a match between the beacons stored on the device and the positive diagnosis list, the user may be notified and advised on steps to take next.
Does this resolve your concerns around the privacy implications of the service? If not, why not?

Comment on: Fucking Intel - Intel's "cripple AMD" function
That's on 32bit instruction sets like SSE3. The X86 license is owned by Intel and AMD pays them to use it. AMD's historical IPC deficit to Intel until Ryzen 3 was as much to do with the compiler as the silicon. That gap has been closed since the most recent generation Ryzen.
Intel holds the lead in single thread performance, but everyone that's not gaming has moved to threading where per core performance is not as critical as having enough threads for the work. This would have happened 9 years ago if Bulldozer had been a little closer in performance in release. Now it's bad money to buy Intel in either consumer or enterprise grades. Any leftover single example victories for Intel now are pyrric at best. Intel is just for fanboys and competitive overclockers now.

Comment on: Is Cloudflare the world's largest MITM honeypot?
That does help. So Cloudflare is the middleman, and the point of all this is that the middleman might not be an honest broker.
I think the mail analogy, while useful, breaks down on closer examination. I don't have an overstuffed traditional mailbox because the sender has to pay to send me anything, and he can't logically send me something that will break my mailbox or otherwise interfere with my ability to send and receive traditional letters and packages. On the electronic side, there's no material marginal cost to send anything electronically. The opportunity for various forms of sabotage are legion -- which we've seen ever since electronic communications became a mass-level thing 20 or 30 years ago.
So, from a non-geek view, the *concept* of something *like* a Cloudflare makes sense. In fact, it seems *necessary* for the system to function in a useful way. The issue, to the extent I can understand it, seems to lie with whether or not Cloudflare is a trustworthy entity. If not, then why not, and what should replace it?

More app stores. Apple heavily monitors which apps can go on their app store, and fucks developers up the ass with all these additional charges just because they can. I'm not sure if I agree with epics choice to retaliate against google too, because on android there are some alternative app stores like aptoide and f-droid. I'm not sure if those have a payment system in place though

From my personal experience family members who I let try Linux have very little to no problems with it. They usually end up breaking things less. I'm talking these people got viruses and malware constantly that made their computers virtually unusable.
Granted these people didn't do much beyond browse the internet and do basic word documents every now and again. They'd still be on Linux now if their shitty like $100 dell computer didn't bust on them, though it's not entirely the computer's fault as they treated it like shit. They're on a like $500 chromebook now. Most others upgraded and to better computers and simply didn't notice a difference between windows and linux since their computer habbits are so basic.
People can use whatever OS they want, I don't care personally. I just think that if something might offer them a better experience they should give it a try that's all, if they don't like it I wouldn't fight with them or anything. It's their computer.
Linux is a great option for those less tech-savvy people it allows them to use their computers safer with less risk of falling for a stupid trick or installing bullshit software or software from a non-official site.
You seemed to have issues with your Linux experience and I wanted to see if I could help, possibly encourage you to give it another shot with a different mindset. In the end it's your computer and you can do what you want with it though. Sorry if I came off the wrong way.

Comment on: Microsoft tells Windows 10 users they can never uninstall Edge. Wait, what? | ZDNet
I don't think it's very fair to tell people with no technical skills to try to solve their issues on their own to try out a different OS when they don't even care about what OS they are using or don't even know what a OS really is.
Windows is annoying in many ways, but I don't think the non-tech savvy mainstream will really want to make the switch if they can't do everything as easily, if not easier, than on Windows and not have to try and fix things for them to work.

>The issues I have with the games I played haven't been solved, although the game is playable, but has weird glitches. No reason for me to play it with glitches instead of doing it in my perfectly fine Windows install.
Alright if you've looked it up that's fair. I've seen so many people who don't look up solutions to their problems (no matter the OS) and it irritates me, sorry for assuming you were one of them.
>Not true. Opening MS Office documents on Libre Office break formatting a lot of the time.
I have heard that, though haven't experienced any issues myself.
>I can do it, but many others don't know what a "PlayOnLinux" is. Once you can install Photoshop and Office from the (main) appstore with the click of a button and it doesn't actually break? Then you might see an exodus from Windows.
Fair point, however it really is the endless adoption issue. Developers don't want to support Linux because it doesn't have enough users. Users don't want to switch to Linux because it doesn't have support for their favorite software.
In the end I see what you're saying, I think that more users will switch to Linux eventually, as Microsoft continues to mistreat them. If Microsoft pushes Windows 10S that'd really be the nail in their coffin.
Right now I think Linux is at the perfect point for users in a non-professional capacity, there's good alternatives to the software they are used to with a lot of convenience features that add to it and it's getting better every day!
Once enough regular users jump ship the developers will come and than so will the professionals.

>To this day, I still have some weird glitches when playing Windows games on Linux.
Have you done any research on your issues such as go on protonDB and see if others have those issues or a fix for them or did you just give up once something went wrong?
>I wasn't talking for myself when mentioning MS Office and Adobe Suite, but they are still the standard in their respective fields. Many people won't switch just because of them.
MS Office is irrelevant here since LibreOffice has no problem saving to and opening from MS Office documents so I'm going to skip this.
>Maybe if running them through Wine was as easy as installing games on Steam/Proton is today (and it really does work) that would be a huge deal.
I installed Photoshop with a click of a button on PlayOnLinux and I'm sure there's a Lutris script for it too, it's super easy and doesn't involve hardly any effort. I've even seen plug&play scripts for the "creative cloud" which I haven't tried since I don't use CC I use CS6, but I wouldn't be surprised if those ran flawlessly.
I think the issue here is that you're not really giving Linux a real chance, like a REAL chance. It sounds to me that you'll install it (possibly on a secondary drive) and use it for a few hours than once something doesn't go as expected you jump ship back to windows "because it's easier". But it's not REALLY easier it just feels easier because you're used to it.
You know how much of a pain a new Windows install is? You have to go online find your most frequently used application, run the installer, restart multiple times and even once you get all your programs installed you have to go and update them every time there's a new version if they don't have an auto updater). What about system updates? You're in the middle of work and bahm "Sorry your system is restarting close your shit or we'll close it for you!" as the system force restarts itself applying updates you have no control over further adding bloat and absolute crap you don't want.
Linux you can install most all your apps from 1 easy application center, they'll update whenever you want them to and you have full control of what does or does not update, not to mention 99% of up dtes don't even require a restart.
I want you to really give Linux a chance, use it for a week as your sole OS (unless you need windows for work than use that for work obviously) and if you run into a problem, look it up and try to solve it. Once you get used to it I think you might see it's far better experience to windows.
I'm not trying to convert you or anything I just think some of your issues with linux may be simply due to a lack of effort on your part to actually switch to a better operating system because the old one already has everything you are used to setup the way you like it.

True but ironic how you are recommending a Microsoft browser after saying this. Look up Microsoft Pride.
