Comment on: Microsoft tells Windows 10 users they can never uninstall Edge. Wait, what? | ZDNet
Get rid of chrome, take the edgepill. It's basically the exact same thing. I'd say go for firefox as they are the only truly "open source" option but mozilla recently backtracked. Also, they are knee deep in social justice bullshit.

To this day, I still have some weird glitches when playing Windows games on Linux. I wasn't talking for myself when mentioning MS Office and Adobe Suite, but they are still the standard in their respective fields. Many people won't switch just because of them. Maybe if running them through Wine was as easy as installing games on Steam/Proton is today (and it really does work) that would be a huge deal.

>Yet the strategy with Edge is clear. Microsoft wants to expand market share in a hurry. It wants a big bite of Chrome, which is now known to be a slow memory hog. It also wants to decimate the very good people at Firefox. uhm, Microsoft's new Edge browser is based on Chrome, it doesn't decrease Chrome's market share if people switch to edge, just like it doesn't decrease Chrome's market share if you use Brave you're still using a Chrome derivative powered by Google's Chromium.

I run Linux as my main RIG and I've only encountered a single game that doesn't play nicely with Linux via steam's Proton and that wasn't even cause the game couldn't run it was cause of Easy Anti Cheat, the game ran perfectly offline. As for MS Office; there's LibreOffice which works flawlessly for me, haven't had a single problem opening and editing MS Office files when I need to. And as for Adobe Suite; That shit is broken on Windows, with the amount of times it crashes I'm surprised they can say it's "Compatible" with any OS. As for Alternatives I'll list them. I used to use Premiere Pro: Switched to kdenlive I hardly notice the difference. I used to use Photoshop; Krita is my personal choice but Photopea is a free website that literally is just Photoshop, like it's just Photoshop. Others like GIMP but personally I found the workflow too different for it to be usable. (Photoshop also runs perfectly in WINE if you must have Photoshop) Not to mention the more people who use Linux the more likely these developers will give us the time of day. The higher Linux gets it's market share the more native applications will be developed.

If people can’t be inconvenienced to go out vote manually at a booth then I would assume that they don’t really care much about voting in the first place. This is all about putting men behind the curtain and diminishing the integrity of elections.

If it does contain an RT co-processor, that would suggest massive uplifts in ray tracing. Not only that, but the space that RT cores on the primary die took up can now be used for rasterization. If this is true this could be a huge breakthrough in performance gains. I'm starting to think it might be true, seeing how Nvidia is marketing the upcoming unveiling as "a new era". Still, I'm going to be skeptical for now until I see more evidence.

Comment on: Uber Will 'Shut Down' in California If It Must Classify Drivers as Employees
They'd have flexibility the same way a retail employee has flexibility though. You might be able to request certain days or times off, but you'll be expected to follow a set scheduled each week. Many drivers (particularly those in suburban / rural areas) will also see their hours limited to peak driving times and drastically cut. And there's definitely negatives to it, but positives as well. Many communities cannot support fully functioning cab companies but do have demand for taxi services. Uber allowed the flexibility for these towns to have DD's for Friday/Saturday events while not requiring the set-up of a company that would largely be sitting around doing nothing the rest of the week. And while Uber is definitely not a smart idea as a full-time job (in it's current state), it can benefit drivers who need a little extra cash, particularly ones that just drive during surge pricing hours.

Of Vice? Wouldn't surprise me. The buck stops at the editors, and the editors of most of these websites are responsible for the massive decline in journalistic standards. The whole industry has been in a massive free-fall over the last few years, and that's a real shame because free press is one of the most important aspects of any strong society. I also speak as a former journalist who misses what journalism used to be before it was replaced by social media.

These are all companies that operate under the same or similar model as Uber. When the rules are applied to them and they follow Uber what is left? (ignoring the fact that rideshares for kids are not an alternative to Uber)

This is far more than wages. A work when you want gig job can’t function when those workers are guaranteed wages plus benefits. Currently, the more people that need Ubers, the more drivers on the street. This would cause workers to do the opposite, as they’d get paid regardless of whether or not they had passengers, and would be encouraged to “work” during dead hours.

funny thing is that the title doesn't really match the story. would be more accurate to say, Mozilla is laying off 250 people to stop losing money. Also to narrow their focus with products. actual press release. https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2020/08/11/changing-world-changing-mozilla/

Still Firefox. Most of peoples concerns can be addressed in settings. Other than google pages (gmail, youtube, etc) loading a bit slower... its at least just as good as any other. Mozilla also has been around for decades.

It doesn't block any ads at all actually. I had to use a hosts file to block ads systemwide. Youtube ads are embedded in such a way that they can't be blocked using a domain, there was apparently a greasemonkey addon at some point I could have used to install scripts that block youtube ads, but it was removed for some reason

Comment on: A Non-Geek Explanation of Discord?
Thanks much. Making dinner now, and it will include my nightly two Manhattans, so I doubt I'll comment tonight. Not that I'm totally shitfaced or anything, being fortunate to have an off switch. But it's relaxation time, and your (fantastic) answers are going to require a level of higher thought and investigation that doesn't mesh all that well with Old Overholt 100-proof rye, and smaller amounts of amaro, angustora liqueur, and a brandied cherry, not to mention clam chowder, bread, and baked beans. I know I will have more questions. Here's a quick one: Does Discord host video chats like Zoom does, or do they not have the technical quality of service (low enough latency and jitter) to provide that?

Comment on: A Non-Geek Explanation of Discord?
Thanks for the answers. They lead to more questions, but before I ask them, I wanted to give you a major thumbs-up for your answer to #4 above. I would *infinitely* rather be told "I don't know" than to have someone make shit up. 1. If Discord is centrally owned, does Discord Inc. manage the content of the various figurative servers? Is that where the censorship complaints I've seen are targeted, or is censorship at a lower level? 2. How are these figurative servers created? Not just the step-by-step, but can anyone do that or is there a gatekeeping process? If the latter, what can you tell me about it? 3. How does Discord pay its bills? Do they run ads? Charge for membership? 4. What's the appeal of Discord? Is it basically another social media platform? If so, what distinguishes it from the others, like Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, or Ruqqus? 5. To the extent that I have even the slightest familiarity with Discord, I've seen it mentioned in tandem with some other platforms, particularly Reddit. Can you explain the interaction, or am I mistaken to think there is any? Again, many thanks for your patient answers and attention.

Comment on: A Non-Geek Explanation of Discord?
Okay, some questions. Before I ask them, I want to thank you again for your concise and understandable reply. I am retired now, but was a telecommunications analyst for investment banks, and in that job I was required to translate technical information into English that intelligent non-specialists could digest. It wasn't always too easy, and often took a lot more words than you used. So both thanks and congrats for a really useful introduction. I really appreciate it. Now some questions. 1. A chat app implies that the user downloads something from Google Play or Apple's App Store. Is that correct? How would a PC user handle it? 2. Is there a central Discord organization? 3. Are "Discord Servers" actually servers, as in computers, or is that a figurative term as your explanation seems to imply? 4. In telecom-related terms, "Discord" seems to reside in the upper layers of the seven-layer OSI stack. (Please don't get too technical in replying, or at least walk slowly; my knowledge of that stack is shallow and narrow and fading from detailed memory. In other words, don't assume that I know a whole lot because I mentioned the stack.) How does it work at lower levels? Is it TCP/IP? Sorry for the squishy nature of this question. It's been a long while since I was deep into telecom land, so I'm not being nearly clear enough with this. Arrrgh. I hate asking such a fuzzy question, and apologize for doing it. Again, *thanks so much for your help and patience thus far*. I've always wondered what the hell "Discord" is, and I'm getting a glimmer now.

I can't find the official Cloudflare post about it, but you can look up "Cloudflare drops 8chan" and similar keywords and you'll get a decent amount of coverage on it. I don't know of any other services they've done that to though, but I'm of the belief that if they've done it once there's nothing stopping them from doing it again.

Comment on: YouTube is removing its community captions feature in September
This is a bad move from youtube, and I don't really get how the community captions feature is "spam or abuse"

Maybe Japanese and Korean people would start leaving youtube for another site, who knows?

Comment on: The Android generation needs its Richard Stallman too
Heck, the FSF needs its Richard Stallman. I know he's a bit abrasive and tone deaf, but the FSF has done dick all since he was kicked out. [This is the clear red signal if ever you needed one that Google is firmly anti-freedom when it comes to software](https://opensource.google/docs/using/agpl-policy/). Apple is even worse. Richard Stallman went further than just not using Android. He didn't even own a cell phone at all, so far as I can remember. To get a Richard Stallman for the Android generation, you'd have to have someone attacking things right from the lowest levels of cellular communication, I think. It's not just Android. It's Broadcom and Huawei and Nokia. We need free ways just to connect with the infrastructure. See all the problems the PinePhone people had getting going to the point of making a phone call.

AMD GPU's do not use chiplets, they use monolithic die's. To add more CU's you simply increase the die size. The 5700XT has a die size of 251 mm², where as Big Navi is rumored to be around 500mm². GPU makers may use chiplets in the future because the maximum die size is restricted by the reticle limit of the production process. Large die's also have a significantly higher chance of containing defects, which means lower yields and much higher costs. This is why a "monster die" like the Nvidia GA100 (826mm²) costs ten thousand dollars per chip. The reticle limit for 7nm is 858mm², so that chip is right on the edge. Nvidia also had to disable nearly 1000 cores on that chip because the chip is so large that they can't produce enough of them without defects (well, TSMC produces the chips, not Nvidia).
