Comment on: Biography of Terry "I'm a White Man; I Wrote My Own Compiler" Davis: The Greatest Programmer to Ever Live

IIRC, schizophrenic symptoms are caused by the atrophy of the temporal lobe. The exact mechanisms are still up for debate but it's a mix of genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Certain flus and cat parasites have been shown to have a strong correlation.

Comment on: SQLite introduces it's own Code of Conduct

I think they're taking a jab at the whole idea of a CoC. Either way it looks like I may move to using exclusively SQLite for personal projects.

Fairly certain it would be exactly this. Except perhaps he would have encoded it into one of his weird file formats that included a 3D object.

Comment on: NPC Programming

The human class does and soy boy would inherit from human. However, you'd override the method and safely error handle anything other than soy. You can't just program as if the people using your product or extending it later have any idea what they're doing :-D

Comment on: NPC Programming

I take issue with the drink method being in the soy class. It'd make more sense to be in the npc class and you pass an argument of soy.

Comment on: Work as a C++ programmer

Recommended reading: Grokking Algorithms Manga Guide to Databases (if you're into that sort of thing it's a good soft introduction) Design Patterns by Gang of Four Note: definitely don't worry about absorbing ALL of the ideas at once. Breadth first will do. Software engineering is a journey not a destination. It's common to run into new types of challenges even when you've been in their game a while.

Did he really pass away or are you being facetious? Looks like the site is down.

Comment on: FreeBSD adopts a 'Code of Conduct', based on the example in Feminism Wiki, talking about systemic oppression etc.

They're entitled to work, that doesn't mean it's best for them or families. However, self determination is enshrined in my person philosophy of life. Personally, I'm busy kicking ass so my wife doesn't have to work if she doesn't want to. If I'm lucky I'll break 6 digits with my expected promotion in March. I'd prefer it if we could have families like that but the economic reality is that it many families can't get by on one paycheck. Pandora'a box has been opened.

Women deserve the legal right not to be forced into sex with their husbands. If you marry that sort of woman it's your problem. They're entitled to work so long as they don't ask for special treatment. That about sums it up. They should have been leading the charge to make sure women aren't treated as property in shit hole countries, instead they made victims of the entire sex and made it hard to start a family in the West.

It's not feminism, it's Marxism with a "feminist" wrapper. Useful feminism died in the 70s when they let countries like Iran and Afghanistan get conquered by medieval sects of Islam and forced the last of the stay at home moms out of their homes in the West.

Comment on: WebAssembly, an executable format for the web

Isn't part of the advantage of WebAssembly that you can write your program in most popular languages and then it is compiled to the WA byte code for execution? How will this make it a tougher learning curve? Debugging will probably be a bitch if you're not used to it, I suppose.

The Surface Pro is a great PC. If it weren't for Windows 10 being a literal spyware OS I'd actually be really happy with it.

Comment on: What is wrong with these modern applications?

This is why I'm getting rid of my mainstream smartphone. Anything I need I can hack together myself. Preordered a Pyra with a 4G LTE modem. Then I'll have a no holds barred computer in my pocket all of the time. Need something? sudo apt-get install widget. Need something that doesn't exist? (unlikely) Crack open my laptop, type up the code and upload it to the device.

Comment on: Is it good idea to throw an exception in .NET C# constructor?

Write shit that doesn't break and if it does, log it yourself. I have the same exception handling and error reporting library in all of my software at work. One DLL included in every project and I know what to expect when shit hits the fan.

Comment on: COBOL Is Everywhere. Who Will Maintain It?

A lot of the stuff has already been virtualized and also, part of the IBM mainframe claim to fame is that you can take a program from the 50s and with little to nop changes, run it on modern hardware. COBOL isn't going away anytime soon in the industries that still use it.

Comment on: Help with C# questions?

I've got nothing to add in terms of your questions. Other people have already covered all of that ground. I do have a question for you there. What's your first programming language? Most of them have the concept of classes these days so it's weird you hadn't heard of it before.

Comment on: In what ways do daemons interact with the system?

I just set up a Tinc daemon last night. It's a program that tunnels network traffic. I don't think a daemon has any defined limits on the tires of processing and io it can do so long as it does it without interactive user input.

It's great because mouse gestures take up a lot of time and once you learn the VIM commands well you'll never need to lift your hand from the keyboard. Also, despite looking dated it's as feature packed and extensible via plugins as you could wish. We're talking autocomplete, spell checking, syntax highlighting, anything you could possibly want it has or you can make it using the built-in scripting language.

VIM is amazing and definitely worth the time to learn. It slowed down for about a week but it was worth it. I'm most productive in VIM now.

I see now that the moral circle jerk isn't earning you anymore sweet sweet upgoats you're not interested in coming up with a better list of potential employers. Please choke on them :-P

Didn't say they were ethical, just that they do cool things. OP asked for companies where he might work internationally, not saints. Perhaps we can make a better list that meets that criteria as well?

Comment on: Graduating as an American Software Developer. I want to live and work abroad. What are some good international software companies?

The awesome thing about working in software is that everybody needs us. Don't limit yourself to companies that make software as a 3rd party vendor. Find big companies that do things you like and see what their software needs are and like @mike_allen said, you just need a remote job, not necessarily an overseas office. Here's some big, cool, international companies off the top of my head: Pfizer, CocaCola, BAE, HSBC, Viacom, Disney, Motorola, Computer Associates... That could lead to data analysis, logistics, aerospace, finance, etc. Software can bring you a lot of places. Good luck!
