Comment on: Sex joke gets a React Week 2019 Conference boycotted, new CoC developed to "protect" participants

As much as I agree that there are some seriously dumb women out there, especially as public speakers in tech, I have to say that there are plenty of women on the side of morality and common sense too. They are just much less visible, since they spend their time working instead of whining on Twitter. Don't count them out.

I have a genuine love of the craft and the work environment is perfect for me (i.e., quiet place with no distractions and little interaction with people outside of my team). So, I'm here to stay... but I have fear for the future, especially considering how much power these tech elites have.

Even if this sick outrage culture doesn't trickle down to the companies that regular people work at, I'm worried there will be wider repercussions. We can already see it happening with de-platforming.

What's wrong with Node.js?

Comment on: Imposter Syndrome in tech

I had imposter syndrome between the time I finished school and the time I started working in the industry. I'd have thoughts like, "I'll never get a job. I'm not really a developer."

But after you get your first full-time job and work there for a few months, there's really no room for those thoughts. At that point, if you can't see that you're competent compared to your peers, maybe you're just not. Shouldn't you notice that in code reviews and generally working as a team, what level you're on?

The organizer's response where he states that there will be a new CoC: https://twitter.com/adamklein500/status/1110568867166851072

I absolutely cannot stand the state of our profession, goats. You cannot publicly say anything even mildly offensive. That joke was mild, okay. Most normal people would scroll past it or be momentarily amused. But these psychos brewed up a witch hunt. Absolutely insane.

Comment on: Linux Outreachy Program pays women $5000 to make trivial whitespace changes

It's a 40 hour per week internship that pays $5500 over the course of three months. Seems like a decent deal for people who are right out of school, but not something that anyone in the industry would be interested in.

To be honest, I wouldn't expect anyone to make major changes to the kernel after three months of an internship if they're fresh out of college.

Comment on: The absolute state of modern software development

Yes, Angular is one of the most over-engineered pieces of garbage that I've ever had the displeasure to work with. Unfortunately, enterprise software companies love it...

Comment on: Top or bottom? (WTF)

The state of the JavaScript ecosystem is ridiculous. npm is run by incompetent fools.

Comment on: 10 free tools for journalists to learn how to code

I disagree that it has a lot to do with math. If you know basic algebra, you can code. You would need a deeper knowledge of mathematics if you're doing data analysis or implementing algorithms yourself, but for the most common jobs out there, you just need basic math skills.

I personally did not start coding until much later in life because I had the misconception that I had to be a math wiz to code. You don't need to be a math wiz, you just have to be persistent. There's a ton of really specialized knowledge in the field and unfortunately most coders are too self-centered and autistic to write tutorials with this in mind, so you'll find even basic tutorials littered with jargon, practically unreadable for a beginner. You just have to power through it.

You don't need to know any math beyond algebra to code. I hate math too, so I didn't try out coding until my mid-twenties. I found out you barely have to use any math at all for the most common tasks.
