Comment on: Working as a web developer is making me hate programming

I've felt the same till I realised that badly designed websites keep the customers coming back for do-overs which means more money. It also means they listen to me a lot more when I say something a designer has designed may look pretty, but usability wise it's a steaming pile of shit. On average, the customer would roll in to get a 3-5k website done and then spend the same amount (or more) in improvements.

If you want it done right the way you know it should be done, then get people with good UI/UX experience.

Comment on: Nasa runs competition to help make old Fortran code faster

The sensitive nature of the code means the competition is only open to US citizens who are over 18.

Doesn't Nasa realise the folks will keep their own copies to distribute underground?

Comment on: What programming language SHOULDN'T you learn?

Getting back to the real world. Here's what's actually sought after by employers:

  • C

  • Java

  • JavaScript

  • PHP

  • Python

  • Ruby

  • C++

  • C#

  • check sources below for a complete list

Sources:

Anything that's not on the list seen from the listed sources can only be considered as "hobby languages", because they have minimal or no practical applications outside that of a hobby. Therefore, I would consider not bothering to learn them unless you want to have fun.

Comment on: Will being a programmer become a near minimum wage occupation?

I actually prefer them going to maccas, because when they eat at my place they'll instantly know what's quality -- and what isn't.

Comment on: Will being a programmer become a near minimum wage occupation?

Yes and no.

Good devs will always charge what they are worth, because they know clients who've been burned before by shit devs will pay the right amount to get it done properly.

Shit devs will always charge less because they want to compete with other shit devs... as they say: "Flies fly towards shit". Cheapskate clients gravitate around shit devs, which is wonderful for good devs, because cheapskate clients get burned by shit devs and return to good devs, paying the appropriate amount, to get it done within a fraction of the time and at a much higher quality.

You ask whether programmers will fall into the minimum wage area? It depends to which group you belong to.

I was just laying it out in one neat post. That's all.

If you need actual help I'd recommend forums such as phpfreaks, etc. The people there are much more inviting.

There's an easy way to deal with rude or unhelpful people on SO -- flag 'em!

I flag a tonne of people who have absolutely nothing to contribute than their disgusting attitude. Almost all of my flags are taken care of within a few minutes.

Feel free to call them out on their rubbish as well, because most times their community "eats their own" (if you catch my drift).

Stackoverflow has its ups and downs.

What you need to understand about SO is it's primarily aimed at finding solutions to obscure problems rather than stuff you can easily find via SO or Google search. Moreover, you need to provide clear cut info on what the issue is, and most importantly, what you have tried. This shows to the people there that you've taken some initiative to solving the problem and that you're not looking for a handout.

Simply put, don't ask questions which answers can be found easily and dont just post "i need a script that does XY. K. Thx. Bye". SO community is for the most part quite toxic and nasty, but if you remember the above you should be fine.

Comment on: F*** You, I Quit - Hiring Is Broken

If you are going to test my knowledge, at least ask relevant questions for the role.

See, this right here sums it up quite nicely of what they typically do i.e. Waste your time. This not only applies to tech industries, but also to Universities and other higher-education courses. They waste your fucking time with irrelevant shit.

Comment on: Making money as an independent developer?

Lots of Indians flood the market now so picking up work if you don't have a presence on say ... WP forums is going to be tough.

I've found this not being much of a problem. Their quality of work is laughable. I've had leads return after couple months asking me to rebuild their brand new website after the Indians fucked it thoroughly through and through.

Comment on: I Want to Start Programming. Where Should I Start?

Ah I see what you're after.

C/C++ is the best way to go for this because it allows you to write code to interact with anything and everything at the fundamental level. For example, you can create your own custom laser engraver using off-the-shelf hardware and then writing software with C/C++ to bring it all to life as well as talking to your computer (dad and I created one for fun few years ago). Alternatively, you can use a Raspberry PI to bypass C/C++ and write code in Python, if this is to your preference. Bear in mind, Python isn't your typical programming language. Python is more closely related to Lisp than to C based languages, which means learning Python isn't going to help you very much in learning other languages. If you were to learn C you'd be able to easily branch into web development later down the track as JavaScript and many other languages are based upon on it.

Comment on: Help! I can never finish a project

I used to have the exact same problem years ago, but using Agile development helped me finish numerous projects within a very short period of time as well.

Small victories always give you a boost of confidence and a sense of achievement :)
